Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is a new banking feature and has become popular in India. Under the Digital India Campaign, the UPI payments method is mainly used in online banking services. BHIM app is the first app-based payment system made by UPI. If you are using BHIM App and facing an issue with the registration process, this guide is for you. The BHIM UP is new and requires more updates to get it stabilized. Since UPI is bound to the Mobile Number, SIM Card, and Internet access vis Mobile data, anything not working correctly can cause the BHIM registration failed issue.

How to solve UPI SMS verification problem in BHIM App? How to fix your device details have changed BHIM issue?

This issue may occur due to various reasons. We will see each possible reason and way to fix that issue.

Solution 1 – Check The SIM is inserted in SIM Slot 1

Many phones have dual SIM trays, and many users take advantage of this feature. Most of the time, we make the SMS sending option to SIM 1 only, and if you insert your Bank registered Mobile number in SIM slot2, then the BHIM app may not be able to send the message from SIM2.

Due to this problem, UPI registration cannot be completed, and you may get the error “UPI registration failed”.

To solve the issue, insert the SIM in SIM Slot1 always.

Solution 2 – Ensure Balance in the SIM to solve UPI sms verification problem.

How to solve BHIM App UPI registration failed issue

UPI registration is done via SMS and requires a balance to send the SMS. If you don’t have a balance in your Bank registered mobile number, verification cannot be completed.

To solve this issue, recharge your number with an available recharge plan or SMS pack.

Solution 3 – Check your mobile number is in the Network range – Best solution to BHIM App is not working

If you are using the Wifi connection to download the App, but your Mobile doesn’t have network coverage, then SMS sending will fail. Due to this issue, your registration of UPI can get failed.

To solve the issue, you can move to the area network coverage is good and then try again to register.

Solution 4 – Check if your number is registered in the Bank.

Your mobile number might not be registered in the Bank. Due to this, the UPI app cannot recognize your identity, and the UPI registration process gets failed.

To solve this issue, you need to register a mobile number in the Bank. Visit your bank branch and fill-up the form to link your mobile number with the Bank account.

Solution 5 – Keep only one SIM in your phone.

Sometimes UPI App (BHIM App) may not detect the correct SIM from your available two SIM cards. Due to this, the “UPI registration failed” issue may get arrises.

To solve this issue, remove the other SIM from the phone and keep your Bank registered mobile number in SIM slot1.

Solution 6 – Try after some time as Servers might be busy.

UPI service is the fastest-growing feature and facing blackout many times. The issue of “UPI registration failed” may occur due to such server overburden.

You may wait for some time and then try again to register for BHIM UPI.

Solution 7 – Disable the VoLTE feature on the phone.

One of our readers has provided this excellent solution. He tried all the above solutions, and nothing worked, but then he turned off the VoLTE feature from his phone, and BHIM UPI registration succeeded.

To turn off the VOLTE feature, go to your Settings –> Wireless, and Communication –> SIM settings –> Turn off VoLTE.

Solution 8 – Fully register your Mobile Number in the Bank (and not just for SMS reception).

Some banks only register your mobile number to receive withdrawal notifications. In this case, you need to link your mobile number with the Bank by going to Branch. After you fully register your mobile number with your account, you can now easily register for UPI, and UPI registration failed issue will be solved.

Solution 9 – Disable Wifi Connection.

Sometimes UPI app needs to be run on the SIM card Internet to verify the SIM details. If you are using a Wifi connection, try turning off the Wifi connection.

Solution 10 – Give the required permission to App.

When starting the app for the first time, the App asks you to allow the required permissions. If you have denied such permissions, you may get a BHIM App UPI registration failed issue. To give the permissions back to App, uninstall it and install it from the play store/app store.

You can also check if all the permissions are allowed to BHIM App by going to the settings–> Apps –> click on All apps and then select BHIM App –> Select permissions. Here, you can enable all the permissions required by the App.

Solution 11 –  Fix we could not create your VPA due to some technical issues by Reinstalling BHIM App.

If none of the methods works, you can uninstall the App and reinstall the App by downloading from the play store or App store.

Solution 12 – Disable the WiFi Calling feature – VoWiFi

A new feature called wifi calling is recently rolled out in India in some networks. As this feature is new and not fully rolled out, you might get an issue with sending and receiving SMS while registering on the BHIM app.

To disable the Wifi calling feature, go to Settings –> Network and connections –> Wifi Calling and then turn off this feature.

Restart the phone, and then you can register on the BHIM App.

Solution 13 – Install BHIM App using Mobile Data

One of our readers, Mr. Rajesh, has found this solution. Many thanks to him.

Even I was facing the same issue on my iPhone. The phone number verification was failing continuously. Finally, I could rectify it. Tried below steps for successful installation:

  1. Uninstall the Bhim App that is already installed.
  2. Do soft Reset(Hold Home Button + Power Button until the phone turns off and Apple Logo comes).
  3. Ensure Wifi is turned off.
  4. Download and Install the App with Mobile Data.
  5. This time Mobile number verification successfully completed.

Note: Ensure you can send the SMS. I had some issues with iMessage, and it was blocking me from sending regular SMS also.

BHIM App not working on iPhone: How to fix BHIM App UPI registration failed issue in iPhone??

There can be an issue with sending SMS itself and not with BHIM App for iPhone users. One of our readers, Mr. Rahul, has found this solution. Many thanks to him.

  • Step1: From the home screen on your iPhone, navigate Settings > Messages.
  • Step2: If an app isn’t available on your Home screen, swipe left to access the App Library.
  • Step3: Tap the Send as SMS switch to turn ON or OFF.
  • Step4: When enabled, the iMessage functionality will be disabled on iPhone, and regular SMS will be enabled. Now, messages are sent as SMS.

  8. Another solution for iPhone dual SIM (eSIM and physical SIM) users:

    If you’re located aboard and using the local SIM respective to the country you are located in your dual SIM iPhone, but want to continue using BHIM app for payments/online bank transfers in India, you have to make sure while mobile number verification that, your iPhone’s “Start new conversations from” setting from “Send & Receive” section has to be selected to your Indian mobile number linked to your bank account.

    To do this, go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive -> Start New Coversations From and set the Indian mobile number here. Try mobile number verification once again in BHIM app. It should work.

    After this you can change the setting back to your overseas mobile number, as BHIM app uses internet to execute the transaction requests.

  18. I would like to share how I could solve my issue with UPI registration, after trying & failing nearly all the above methods. I hope the info will be useful for at least a few who are searching this page desperately. Those who have changed their mobile number with banks at least once, put more attention reading this.

    I was receiving regular transaction updates on my number but was unable to register for UPI with the same number. I tried disabling and enabling the UPI feature through the internet banking portal, still the error stayed.

    While searching through all the available options in the internet banking portal, I could see that a request was ‘Pending’ for number registration (mobile banking) through ATM. I could understand that it was related to the number change request I submitted 3 years back, but was incomplete, as the bank officials didn’t highlight about the requirement of the same to me and I didn’t notice it as I was getting normal alerts.

    I went to the ATM with the mobile as well as debit card and completed the pending registration. That’s it. I could further register immediately with Google Pay!

  19. Mobile number verification fails. This happens because the number BHIM is trying to send an SMS to, usually starts with a “0” instead of country code “+91”. When you’re in India this is surely not a problem. But overseas, you MUST dial +91 before any number to call or text. So, when the SMS verification does not happen, the app obviously will not work. BHIM randomly resets access and every once in a while (probably once a year) it asks you to verify the mobile number. Now that I am in the US and this has happened, I cannot use it till I go back to India and do the mobile number verification in India. Bad app design.

    iPhone – Turn SMS On / Off

  31. This Solution worked for me as well, seems it is part of ios issues with BHIM app.
    I had all the time issue in mibile number verification in my previous iphone7 and later in Iphone 10. The error was “some issue with server please try again later” and some times ” Mobile number verification timedout, try again later”.
    I did the same solution of using 3G instead of 4G and the problem resolved.
    Helpdesk please make this part of iOS solution and raise to your app development team as well.

In BHIM app , after entering the last 6 digits of debit card and expiry date , I get a message “Wrong Debit Card Details” and the screen does not move forward but I do get 6 digit OTP . Where should I fill that when the app refuses to move forward ?? On HDFC app , the process stalls after I enter bank name . The accounts held in the bank are not displayed . Finally, I just went to Setting —>mobile data —> mobile data options —>voice & data —> select 3G ( un check 4G Voltesetting & out of 4G ) & it worked as I was able to send message & got confirmation as well.     When I go back, it shows screen to enter 4digit pin. and after this it continues to registration window and again after failure it continues to registration failed.

  111. Validation error occurs when you enter incorrect details. Pls do check the details you are entering

    After you reinstall it will ask for permission for call/sms/location.

    I just updated my Samsung M30 Phone to Android 10 and then after Mobile verification failed with BHIM App for at least 10 days i would have tried.
    I had dual Sim as well and registered SIM placed in Tray 1, and i have removed the Non registered SIM as well. I ave tried all possibilities including turning off the VoLTE. Issue was not resolved.

    Finally i resolved by turning off my WiFi while attempting the SIM verification.
    Kept WiFi turned off and Mobile Data was On and tried verifying the SIM its got success.

  126. Registration timed out message keeps coming. Sometimes it says request not sent. Registration failed message also came once.
    More than 20 attempts made already. All checks suggested in Bhim help page are complied.
    Please suggest solution early

    Your issue might be with the bank. Visit the bank branch and check whether your mobile number is fully registered with your account and not just for sms banking. Ask them to register your mobile number for UPI verification.

  133. my mobile number is not getting verified. I tried to reinstall the app on my phone which is Iphone 6 but to no avail. Also have only 1 sim slot, net connection and mobile network coverage is good- inspite of that i am getting a mobile verification failed message – Already 15-20 sms have gone but none are of any use.   135. Hi, have you tried registering on PhonePe, Google pay apps? If not, please try on these app and let us know if it works. If not, mention the specific error you are getting.

    I have tried 100 of times in these 20 days. Before formatting fone, BHIM app was running smoothly on my iPhone, There is no dual sim problem as I phone is single sim, I am postpaid user and MY SMS are going out properly to other users.
    Even i uninstalled and reinstalled the app to try but nothing is working.

    My I’m regular user of BHIM UPI App. But recently I’m facing issue while doing some transactions. It gives me error ‘Your device details have been changed, please complete mobile verification process once again to perform transactions.’ I’m using same mobile & same SIM card of IDEA which is working one. So I deleted BHIM UPI App from mobile & reinstalled. But now I’m not able register my mobile with BHIM UPI. During initial registration it’s not sending SMS for verification. Please help.
