How to solve BHIM App UPI registration failed issue

Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is a new feature of banking and has become popular in India. Under the Digital India Campaign, the UPI payments method is mostly used online service in banking. BHIM app is the first app based on this UPI payments. If you are using BHIM App and facing an issue with the registration process, then this guide is for you. In this article, I have explained how to solve BHIM UPI registration failed issue.

How to solve the issue of “UPI registration failed” in BHIM App

This issue may occur due to various reasons. We will see each possible reason and way to fix that issue.

Solution 1 – Check The SIM is inserted in SIM Slot 1

Many phones have dual SIM tray, and many users take advantage of this feature. Most of the time we make the SMS sending option to SIM 1 only, and if you insert your Bank registered Mobile number in SIM slot2, then the BHIM app may not be able to send the message from SIM2.

Due to this problem, UPI registration cannot be completed, and you may get the error “UPI registration failed”.

To solve the issue insert the SIM in SIM Slot1 always.

Solution 2 – Ensure Balance in the SIM to solve UPI registration failed issue.

How to solve BHIM App UPI registration failed issue

UPI registration is done via SMS and requires a balance to send the SMS. If you don’t have a balance in your Bank registered mobile number, then verification cannot be completed.

To solve, this issue recharges your number with an available topup or SMS pack.

Solution 3 – Check your mobile number is in the Network range.

If you are using the Wifi connection to download the app, but your Mobile doesn’t have network coverage, then SMS sending will get failed. Due to this issue, your registration of UPI can get failed.

To solve the issue, you can move to the area network coverage is good and then try again to register.

Solution 4 – Check if your number is registered in the Bank.

Your mobile number might not be registered in the Bank. Due to this UPI app is not able to recognize your identity and the UPI registration process gets failed.

To solve this issue, you need to register a mobile number in the Bank. Visit your bank branch and fill-up the form to link your mobile number with the Bank account.

Solution 5 – Keep only one SIM in your phone.

sometimes UPI App (BHIM App) may not be able to detect the correct SIM from your available two SIM cards. Due to this, the “UPI registration failed” issue may get arrises.

To solve this issue, just remove the other SIM from the phone and keep your Bank registered mobile number in SIM slot1.

Solution 6 – Try after some time as Servers might be busy.

UPI service is the fastest-growing feature and facing blackout many times. The issue of “UPI registration failed” may occur due to such server overburden.

You may wait for some time and then try again to register for BHIM UPI.

Solution 7 – Disable VoLTE feature on the phone.

One of our readers has provided this excellent solution. He tried all the above solutions and nothing worked, but then he turned off the VoLTE feature from his phone, and BHIM UPI registration got successful.

To turn off the VOLTE feature, go to your Settings –> Wireless and Communication –> SIM settings –> Turn off VoLTE.

Solution 8 – Fully register your Mobile Number in the Bank (and not just for SMS reception).

Some banks only register your mobile number just to receive withdrawal notifications. In this case, you need to link your mobile number with the Bank by going to Branch. After you fully register your mobile number with your account, you can now easily register for UPI and UPI registration failed issue will be solved.

Solution 9 – Disable Wifi Connection.

Sometimes UPI app needs to be run on the SIM card Internet to verify the SIM details. If you are using a Wifi connection, then try turning off the Wifi connection.

Solution 10 – Give the required permission to App.

When starting the app for the first time, the app asks you to allow the required permissions. If you have denied such permissions, you may get UPI registration failed issue. To give the permissions back to App, uninstall the app and install it from the play store/app store.

You can also check if all the permissions are allowed to BHIM app by going to the settings–> Apps –> click on All apps and then select BHIM App –> Select permissions. Here, you can enable all the permissions required by the app.

Solution 11 – Re-install the BHIM App

If none of the methods works, you can uninstall the app and reinstall the app by downloading from the play store or App store.

Solution 12 – Disable Wifi Calling feature

A new feature called wifi calling is recently been rolled out in India in some networks. As this feature is new and not fully rolled out, you might get issue of sending and receiving SMS while registering on the BHIM app.

To disable the wifi calling feature, go to Settings –> Network and connections –> Wifi Calling and then turn off this feature.

Restart the phone and then you can register on the BHIM App.

Solution 13 – Install BHIM App using Mobile Data

One of our readers Mr. Rajesh have found this solution. Many thanks to him.

Even I was facing the same issue on my iPhone. The phone number verification was failing continuously. Finally, I could rectify it. Tried below steps for successful installation:

  1. Uninstall the Bhim App is already installed.
  2. Do soft Reset(Hold Home Button + Power Button until the phone turns off and Apple Logo comes).
  3. Ensure Wifi is off.
  4. Download and Install the App with Mobile Data
  5. This time Mobile number verification successfully completed.

Note: Ensure you are able to send the SMS. I had some issues with iMessage and it was blocking me from sending normal SMS also.

    Hi,
    My I’m regular user of BHIM UPI App. But recently I’m facing issue while doing some transactions. It gives me error ‘Your device details have been changed, please complete mobile verification process once again to perform transactions.’ I’m using same mobile & same SIM card of IDEA which is working one. So I deleted BHIM UPI App from mobile & reinstalled. But now I’m not able register my mobile with BHIM UPI. During initial registration it’s not sending SMS for verification. Please help.

    Recently I have formatted my Iphone and reinstalled the BHIM app, from last 15-20 days i am not able to register my sim on BHIM app, as it always say ” “Failed to Verify Number” Mobile number verification has failed due to some issue. Please try again
    I have tried 100 of times in these 20 days. Before formatting fone, BHIM app was running smoothly on my iPhone, There is no dual sim problem as I phone is single sim, I am postpaid user and MY SMS are going out properly to other users.
    Even i uninstalled and reinstalled the app to try but nothing is working.

          Your issue might be with the bank. Visit the bank branch and check whether your mobile number is fully registered with your account and not just for sms banking. Ask them to register your mobile number for UPI verification.

      Friends, just to update that I have been facing the same issue of mobile registration failed post formatting of my iPhone7 . I was doing hit & trial with mentioned solutions but to no avail . Finally, I went to Setting —>mobile data —> mobile data options —>voice & data —> select 3G ( un -check 4G VoLTE ON & 4G VoLTE OFF ) & it worked. Finally after 3 months I’m able to access BHIM UPI.

    Hi All,

    I just updated my Samsung M30 Phone to Android 10 and then after Mobile verification failed with BHIM App for at least 10 days i would have tried.
    I had dual Sim as well and registered SIM placed in Tray 1, and i have removed the Non registered SIM as well. I ave tried all possibilities including turning off the VoLTE. Issue was not resolved.

    Finally i resolved by turning off my WiFi while attempting the SIM verification.
    Kept WiFi turned off and Mobile Data was On and tried verifying the SIM its got success.

    Uninstall the app then reinstall it.
    After you reinstall it will ask for permission for call/sms/location.

    Provide access to all 3 then try. Issue will be resolved.

    I am also facing the same issue as you all are facing. I tried many times. None of given solution worked. Tried WiFi suggestion, tried VoLTE On/Off, tried reinstalling 25+ times, tried restarting phone and then reinstalled, tried Factory Reset and installing app BUT the result is same, registration not working .
    Tried on another Phone with same sim card. Tried everything.

    But Here i noticed 1 thing which may be useful to developers that

    When I go back, it shows screen to enter 4digit pin. and after this it continues to registration window and again after failure it continues to registration failed.

    At last None of the given solution Worked. Means there is a problem with the app, not the devices or any messaging app and BHIM app makers should Admit this.

After selecting Language and allowing app to send notification etc – I do not get the option to select SIM – i.e. It’s just not there to select. Don’t know if i was able to explain my problem – wish I could post a picture here to clarify. Has someone else faced this issue and was there a resolution?

      Yes, it might be the device-specific issue. You can report the issue from your app to get it fixed

        This can never be the problem
        With phone model, am also using iphone 11 pro max and others iphones as well but this problem is persistent. Stop blaming phone handsets. It’s better you use your energy fixing the app

    I have an iphone which allows a virtual sim but i am using only one sim and when i try to login i just see verify mobile number but the app is not sending the SMS. i have tried turning off VOLTE, wifi and restarting. There is balance on sim and even network

      BHIM App and iPhones seem to have issue. Please wait for the fix from BHIM App OR you can use other UPI Apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, etc

    Even I was facing the same issue in my iPhone. Phone number verification was failing continously. Finally I could rectifiy it.
    Tried below steps for successfull installation:
    1. Uninstall the Bhim App if already installed.
    2. Do soft Reset(Hold Home Button + Power Button untill phone turns off and Apple Logo comes).
    3. Ensure Wifi is off.
    4. Download and Install the App with Mobile Data
    5. This time Mobile number verification successfully completed.
    Note: Ensure you are able to send the SMS. I had some issue with iMessage and it was blocking me from sending normal SMS also.

    I had registered my HDFC mobile app with UPI and created a VPA too. I deleted that VPA and tried creating new one. But now I am unable to register HDFC mobile banking app with UPI. I keep getting “Validation Error.” I have tried all steps above. Contacting HDFC is a waste, as HDFC really don’t care about customer’s problems. Any solutions?

    I was facing the verification failure, for several months, on IPhone. Tried several steps, but the VoLTE disabling option finally resolved the issue.

      Bhim does not pick up any phone on the app’s toll free number and landline number.

    Hello, my bank account connected sim has lost, and I renewed the same number sim, after that every bank-related update and SMS I received on that sim, but unable to activate my UPI bank accounts,
    I did the above solutions, but nothing work.. that error showing “Couldn’t Register”
